The Friday, 8 October 2004, meeting of the General George S. Patton, Jr., Chapter of the CASSAR was held in the library of the Berylwood Officers Club, being called to order by Chapter President J. Stephen Hurst. Following the pledge and the invocation, members adjourned to the buffet. In attendance were seven compatriots: President J. Stephen Hurst, Ron Risley, Dick Hawley, Richard Caldwell and Jim Cary, and xxx guests, Gary and Bernie Smith, Melissa Cary, Jason Cary, Summer Heathcote and Brigette Bowles. President Hurst reconvened the meeting at 12:30 p.m.The minutes for 10 September 2004 were distributed and approved.
The Treasurer’s report was distributed and accepted with no changes.
The Registrar’s report was presented and approved as written. Gary Jo Smith of Camarillo has submitted his membership application and it was forwarded to the SAR State Registrar on September 19, 2004. His qualifying Patriot ancestor is Roger Edgerton of Connecticut, and his great-great grandfather was the Hon. Albert Edgerton, the first state president of the Minnesota SAR.
The Chaplain is out of town on vacation, and no report was presented.
Old Business:
Steve Hurst and Ron and Rosemarie Risley will represent the General George S. Patton, Jr. Chapter, at the SAR State Meeting which will be held at Monterey, California on November 5 and 6, 2004.
Richard Hawley, Bob Taylor and Ron Risley will represent the chapter to present an SAR Medal of Appreciation to Pati Longo, Regent of the Mitz-Khan-a-Khan Chapter DAR, at Carrow’s Restaurant at Harbor Boulevard and Seward Street in Ventura, at the DAR Chapter luncheon on Thursday, October 28, 2004.
Richard Hawley and Ron Risley will present the SAR Fire Commendation Medal to Ventura City Fire Chief Mike Lavery at 10:00 am, Wednesday, October, 27, 2004 at the Ventura City Police/Fire Headquarters Building.
A time and place will need to be arranged for presentation of the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal to Oxnard Police Chief Art Lopez.
New Business:
James D. Cary of Ventura was initiated into the chapter by President Steve Hurst. His Patriot Ancestor is Henry Bailey of Greensville County, Virginia. His membership application was approved by NSSAR on September 9, 2004.
Nominations for chapter officers for 2005 were received, and the following compatriots were suggested for the chapter office indicated:
- President – Richard Hawley
- Vice President – Steve Hurst
- Secretary – Bob Taylor
- Treasurer – Richard Caldwell
- Registrar – Ron Risley
- Chaplain – Frank Budroe
- Historian – Joe Coffman
Since the Chapter was participating in the Veterans Day Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, and the special event at the San Buenaventura Mission and Cemetery Park, on Thursday, November 11, 2004, the Chapter decided not to have a regular monthly meeting on Friday, November 12, 2004.
The next regular monthly meeting of the General George Patton, Jr. Chapter SAR, will be held at noon, on Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Berylwood Officers Club, Ventura County Naval Base, Port Hueneme CA. The meeting will feature chapter business and fellowship, election and installation of officers for the coming year, and a door prize drawing.
The Chapter program was a very interesting and informative presentation was given by Compatriot Richard Hawley regarding the events and personalities surrounding the Battle of Saratoga in New York during the American Revolution.
