Minutes of the 12 March 2010 Meeting
The regular monthly luncheon meeting of the General George S. Patton, Jr., Chapter SAR was held Friday, 12 March 2010, in the Garden Room of Marie Callender’s Restaurant, 1295 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA. The meeting was called to order by President Robert Taylor. The Invocation was given by Chaplain Gary Smith, followed by the Pledge to the Flag and the Pledge to the SAR.
In attendance were twenty-two Compatriots: President Robert Taylor, Vice President Bill Hurley, Secretary Gil Anema, Treasurer Bill Bays, Past Presidents Ward White, Hale Hamilton, Steve Hurst and Ron Risley, Garland Middleton, Eric Stassforth, Gary Smith, Frank Budroe, Richard McMullen, Bob Colbern, Steve Coburn, Lou Krueger, David Bosworth, Bill Henry, Ken Lynch, George Horne, Dan Sword and former VP General Elvin Spray visiting from Hawaii. The 14 guests included Bob Jordan, Garrett Coburn, Mrs. Vicki Schmaeman (mother of compatriot Joel Schmaeman), prospective member Jim Wyly and Compatriots’ wives Mrs. Rosemarie Risley, Mrs. Shirley Hamilton, Mrs. Bernie Smith, Mrs. Willie Budroe, Dr. Sunny McMullen, Mrs. Rosalee Middleton, Mrs. Elaine Coburn, Mrs. Mary Hurley, Betsy Horne and Mrs. Lois Lynch.
Reports: Reports were given by the following officers:
Secretary Gil Anema presented the minutes of the 12 February meeting, which were approved with the following corrections:
- “The Spirit of America” essay should read “The Knight Essay” contest

Treasurer Bill Bays presented the treasurer’s report, which was approved as read. An increase in the cost for lunch to $16 plus $1 for dessert became effective at the March meeting to cover the lunch increase.
Registrar George Horne presented the registrar’s report. Applications for David Wyers and Gene Cooper are at NSSAR. The application for Leslie Howell was approved, but with sadness to report Compatriot Howard passed away before its approval. Joel Schmaeman’s and Gil Anema’s supplemental applications are at NSSAR. Prospective Supplemental for Richard McMullen is on work. Three prospective members are being assisted by Eric: Denis Murphy, Trevor Ashton and Jim Wyly.
Ron and Rosemarie Risley were recognized and congratulated for 53rd Wedding Anniversary.
Hale Hamilton was recognized for celebrating a birthday in February.
President Robert Taylor presented certificates of appreciation to the Color Guard from Forest Lawn Cemetery for their participation in Massing of the Colors at the Presidents Day ceremony.
Lou Kruezer reported there were no “Knight Essay” submissions.
135th Meeting of the California SAR membership 9-10 April 2010 at the Embassy Suite in Sacramento will be attended by Ron Risley, Steve Hurst and Dick Hawley representing the chapter. See Bob Taylor if you would like to attend.
Flag was being purchased as approved by the members at the February meeting in response to the challenge by Compatriot Bennett. Looking for inputs for a suitable organization in which to foster the ideals of the SAR.
New Business: A half staff flag was being presented at the meeting in honor of Compatriot Travis Spears, past president of the CASSAR, and long term advocate in the state organization. A motion was approved to send a Card of Condolence to the family from the chapter.
Program: “Rifles & Sidearms of the Revolutionary War” by Compatriot Bill Bays. Compatriot Bays explained the difference between a musket and rifle and the implications. He also discussed a pivotal battle and how a soldiers understanding of his weapon was important in the Battle of Alamance.
Next Meeting: Friday, 9 April 2010 – Ken Koch, Commander of SCV Camp 2062, CSS Virginia presenting “War for Southern Independence – What Your Teacher Didn’t Tell You”
Closing: The meeting was adjourned following the SAR recessional and the benediction by Chaplain Gary Smith.
